People who have been here will likely tell you it’s the most beautiful nursery they’ve ever seen, which is why those people sometimes come from hundreds of miles away to buy their plants at Zehr’s Farm Market & Nursery.

Located along Route 18, the Seaway Trail, in the Niagara County community of Burt, Zehr’s is indeed different from other nurseries….a difference that is clearly obvious to their customers.

Those customers, along with a number of nursery professionals, will tell you that the annuals and perennials at Zehr’s are heartier and healthier than those you’ll find elsewhere. There’s good reason for that, of course. All of their annuals, for example, are sold in six-inch pots, rather than flats of smaller plants. So, when customers take these more mature plants home, they have an “instant” flower garden.

 

You should also know that Zehr’s offers many more kinds of flowers than other nurseries, including some 400 varieties of annuals and almost 1000 varieties of perennials. There are more than 120 new perennials for 2004. And, like the annuals sold at Zehr’s Farm Market & Nursery, the perennials are also more mature than you’ll find elsewhere, which is why all are sold in gallon and a half containers.

So, why does Zehr’s do things differently than other nurseries? It’s because owners Mark and Laureen (Laurie) Van Buren are not “rooted” in nursery practices from the past. In fact, neither has had formal horticultural training. Instead, they both turned their long-time hobbies of gardening into a unique and successful nursery business, one where they grow all of their own plants.
 

Laurie has also distinguished herself as a master creator of flower baskets and “living bouquets”. She offers more than a hundred unique designs that you won’t find anywhere else.

Given all of that, it’s no wonder that the Niagara County Legislature presented Zehr’s with its 2002 MICRO-ENTERPRISE SMALL BUSINESS AWARD. More importantly, however, Zehr’s customers appreciate the fact that Mark and Laurie offer them only the healthiest and most beautiful of flowers and that they offer new flower varieties first.
